Nick has got 10 years’ experience working in the Environment Sector as a geo-morphologist and River Engineer. His skills include GIS mapping and the design and supervision of River Restoration schemes. He has also been involved in the delivery of the Water Resources and Water Framework Directive aspects of HS2.

Consultant, EA Fradley Office (West Midlands Region): 2020 – Present

Nick is supporting the delivery and funding of NFM lead schemes across the West Midlands area. The schemes are at a variety of stages of completion; from Initial Assessment/opportunity to reporting on projects nearing completion. Nick is also helping PSO to improve knowledge of delivery of NFM projects both within the EA and stakeholders through online tools such as virtual NFM workshops.

Environmental specialist, Werrington Brook Improvement Project, EA 2015 – 2020

A river restoration scheme through a suburban area of Peterborough. The design enhances existing fluvial geomorphology and maintains flood risk standards whilst delivering water quality improvements. Nick assisted with outline and detailed design and also authored documentation for flood modelling and consent purposes. Nick conducted site supervision for the scheme which included supervising the movement of materials between reaches and the subsequent creation of in-channel earthworks features including re-meandering and berms.

Environmental lead, Lower Wey Flood Alleviation Scheme (FAS) – EA 2019 – 2020

Nick coordinated environmental deliverables for the Lower Wey FAS. Nick authored the Preliminary Environmental Impact Assessment (PEIR) for the project which utilised linear defences and Flood Compensation Areas (FCA) including the creation of wetland areas within the FCA options to achieve net environmental gains.

Environmental lead, Rammey Sluice Fish and Eel Pass – EA 2019 – 2020

Nick coordinated the delivery of environmental deliverables for the Rammey Sluice fish pass including authoring the Preliminary Environmental Assessment (PEA) and supporting the planning application process with Epping Forest District Council.

Water Resources and WFD lead, Kendal Appraisal Package – EA 2018 – 2020

The Kendal Appraisal Package will deliver an Economic, Technical and Environmental appraisal of flood risk and flood risk management options of nine study areas. Nicks first role on the project was to author WFD Preliminary Screening Assessments for three Flood Alleviation Schemes (FAS) within the Kendal Appraisal Package. Nick then went on to co-ordinate and author the Water Resources section of the Environmental Statement for phase one of the Kendal FAS.

Environmental Consultant, HS2 Phase 2B – HS2 Ltd 2017 – 2020

Nick worked within the Water Resources and WFD teams for areas L1B and L2B to support the delivery of the Environmental Statement on behalf of HS2 Ltd for Hybrid Bill Delivery in 2020. The role included authoring volume 2, 5 and BID documents for surface water and groundwater sections, covering four community areas for the water resources team, acting as Assistant WFD lead authoring volume 5 and BID documents for four community areas, survey coordinator for the WFD team and lead surveyor for the WFD team.

Consultant, Asset Performance and Fisheries Biodiversity and Geomorphology teams, Environment Agency Brampton Office (Anglian Region): 2016 – 2018

Nick worked within the AP team to develop business case solutions for the decommissioning of sluice, bridge and weir assets in the Bedford and Ely areas. Nick also produced an economic appraisal of the value of flood defences within the fenlands based on ‘do nothing’ and ‘do minimum’ scenarios, to be used for the apportionment of six-year programme funding. Nick also provided desk and field based geomorphological and GIS support for the FBG team. 

Assistant Project Manager, Welland for People and Wildlife project 2013-2015

Three year, £600,000 scheme to restore 1.8km of the River Welland as it passes through the town of Market Harborough, Leicestershire. Key responsibilities included; baseline field work data gathering; outline and detailed project design; stakeholder and public engagement; landowner agreements; production of model and report for Flood Risk Assessment; Flood Defence Consent documentation; tender documentation and assessment; lead construction supervisor.

Lead project partner, Welland Headwaters Improvement Plan 2014-2016

Five year pilot scheme to identify issues affecting WFD status of the Upper Welland, report findings to landowners and implement pilot solutions. Key responsibilities include: Field walkover; water/sediment/sonde/ invertebrate sampling; sediment modelling; designs for pilot schemes; consultation with landowners; production of interim and final reports. Delivery of pilot interventions.
