Giulia is a Chartered Engineer with over 13 years’ experience in the Water and Environment sector. After a few years working in Italy, delivering complex FCERM projects across fluvial, maritime, ground and surface water, she moved to the UK in 2015 and has since worked on high-profile projects for a variety of clients in the Private and Public Sectors, building a strong knowledge of UK industry and an excellent reputation.

Giulia started as a Hydrologist at Atkins in December 2015, where she delivered Natural Flood Management (NFM), River Restoration and Strategic and Outline Business Case projects for the Environment Agency, Natural England and Local Authorities. She delivered hydrological calculations and assessments, built integrated catchment hydraulic models, completed option appraisals and engineering calculations and drawings.

Joining Capita in 2017 as a Senior Engineer she became responsible for Resource Management, Recruitment, Line Management and Project Delivery as Project Manager and Lead Engineer on high-profile projects. She was then promoted to Principal Engineer in March 2020. This experience enabled her to gain strong commercial skills, both in terms of managing NEC contracts, complex programmes and the Team’s P&L and raise her profile especially with the Environment Agency.

She then joined Arup in July 2021 as Principal Engineer, through to October 2023, working as Project Manager and Technical Lead on FCERM projects. She led multi-disciplinary projects, acting as “trouble-shooter” on complex FCERM projects that require expert advice.

Tenbury FRMS OBC and planning, Environment Agency (2022, present) – Delivery Manager

Initially I was brought on the project to provide FCRM advice and I then became the Delivery Manager for the Tenbury FRMS Outline Business Case and planning. The project consists of flood defences and landscape enhancements proposals within the highly heritage and environmentally sensitive town of Tenbury Wells. My role includes coordinating a multi-disciplinary team of 15+ resources and liaising with Sub-consultants, Client, Contractor and Stakeholders.

Bewdley FRMS Outline Business Case, Environment Agency (2022) – FCERM Advisor

I provided specialist FCRM advice to the project team through the Outline Business Case process for Bewdley FRMS, which consists of flood defences at Beale’s Corner in Bewdley, and lead the delivery of the Flood Risk Assessments associated with the scheme.

Gloucestershire CBG, Environment Agency (2021, present) – Project Manager, Technical Lead

I am the Catchment Based Group (CBG) Lead under the EA Collaborative Delivery Framework. As part of this role, I am the PM on several Flood Risk Management and Environmental enhancement schemes that are grouped under the Gloucestershire catchment.

Gloucestershire NFM & BGI & RR Phase I and II, Environment Agency (2021, present)

This is a catchment scale NFM and Blue-Gren Infrastructure (BGI) and River Restoration (RR) study looking at opportunities and benefits of NFM/BGI/RR within 12 catchments in Gloucestershire. I am the PM and technical lead for the project, leading a multidisciplinary team of 15+ people through the creation of opportunity mapping, assessment of feasibility of NFM, BGI and RR and flow reduction contributions, assessment of Natural Capital and high-level economics assessment.

NFM Strategic advice, Environment Agency (2021)

I advised the EA on strategies to improve the delivery of Natural Flood Management (NFM) schemes through the EA business case model and advice on potential changes to process that may help with making a stronger case for Nature-based Solutions.

Kendal FRMS – Phase 1 Detailed Design, Environment Agency, UK (2019 – 2021) – Design Lead

Detailed Design and Construction of flood defences are underway on the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme (FRMS), which will benefit over 2,000 properties in Kendal. I was Design Lead for three reaches of the Phase 1 Kendal detailed design. I liaised and coordinated a team of specialists including Landscape Architects, Environmental Scientists, Geotechnical and Structural Engineers and Hydrogeology specialists. I developed designs that sought to minimise impacts to the environment, including the use of existing flood defence assets so much as practical. My designs promoted the creation of new habitats through tree planting and landscaped areas, including SuDS features. Therefore, contributing to offset the carbon footprint of the scheme.
