Sea defences at Dymchurch, Kent

Role: NEC ECC Project Manager

Details of services provided: Peter was appointed to manage the installation of 2.2km of tidal coast protection at Dymchurch on the South coast, using many pre-cast concrete elements, groyne field and accesses. In addition to his normal duties Peter provided valiuable design support, scope creep mitigation, value engineering, risk management, planning and programming support and cost advice which helped create a collaborative environment between Client, Principal Contractor, Designer, Supervisor and key stakeholders. The scheme was successfully completed ahead of programme and over £2m under budget.

In just over 4 years he managed to grow a thriving national business in the UK, with turnovers exceeding £20m/year. Marco was able to raise his Environment Business's brand awareness and reputation in the industry whilst offering competitive, high quality multi-disciplinary consultancy services.

Details of services provided: In 2014 Marco was appointed to manage the growth of an Environment Sector within the Infrastructure business. In just over 4 years he managed to grow a thriving national business of over 250 staff spread across 11 offices in the UK and comprising over 10 disciplines. Marco designed a bespoke Resource Management System aimed at creating a collaborative, integrated environment, preventing the formation of office silos and enhancing the sharing of technical best practice in each discipline. Marco was able to attract many high calibre professionals into the business, promoting diversity values and nurturing young talents thus laying the foundation for the future prosperity of the business.

Client: Capita Real Estate and Infrastructure / Environment Agency

Commission: Project Develiery Units (PDUs) (2017) (£20m)

Role: Bid Director

Details of services provided: In 2017 the Environment Agency let a large 2-year long Framework for the delivery of a streamlined programme across 6 delivery units (PDUs). Marco was the Bid Director leading the preparation of the bid, including the Commercial Model. The tender was run in accordance to a very streamlined programme.

Key achievements:

  • The tender was successful on 2 PDUs (No 2 and 5)

  • The Commercial Model implemented delivered high volume of work at high margins thus contributing to achieving the business targets for future years.

Technical advice

Client: Environment Agency

Staff: Marco Garfagnoli / James Frazer

Commission: Newhaven Flood Alleviation Scheme (2014-16)(£18m)

Role: Project Director / Project Manager

Details of services provided: Between 2014 and 2016 Marco and James led the delivery of a multi-disciplinary appraisal for a flood alleviation scheme in Newhaven, East Sussex. The scheme presented significant complexities such as the need to cross a railway line with the flood defence, building within the Port of Newhaven and beyond the national border with France and over the South Downs National Park with resulting landscape, environmental and ecological challenges and constraints. Finally the affordability of the scheme was at risk requiring the identification of external sources of funding.

Key achievements:

  • The Business Case was successfully approved first time by the Environment Agency's Large Project Review Group (LPRG)

  • The team managed to secure £3m of external contribution from the local LEP

  • The Business Case was awarded the Best LPRG Business Case in 2016
