Client: Environment Agency

Staff: Marco Garfagnoli / James Frazer

Commission: Newhaven Flood Alleviation Scheme (2014-16)(£18m)

Role: Project Director / Project Manager

Details of services provided: Between 2014 and 2016 Marco and James led the delivery of a multi-disciplinary appraisal for a flood alleviation scheme in Newhaven, East Sussex. The scheme presented significant complexities such as the need to cross a railway line with the flood defence, building within the Port of Newhaven and beyond the national border with France and over the South Downs National Park with resulting landscape, environmental and ecological challenges and constraints. Finally the affordability of the scheme was at risk requiring the identification of external sources of funding.

Key achievements:

  • The Business Case was successfully approved first time by the Environment Agency's Large Project Review Group (LPRG)

  • The team managed to secure £3m of external contribution from the local LEP

  • The Business Case was awarded the Best LPRG Business Case in 2016
